10 SEO Quick Wins
for Small Business Websites

Ten high-impact SEO improvements you can make today — no agency or technical expertise required. Each one rated by difficulty and time.

How to use this guide: Work through each item in order — they're ranked roughly from easiest to hardest. Check off each one as you complete it. Most businesses that complete all 10 see measurable improvement in local search rankings within 60–90 days.

Claim & Fully Complete Your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile (GBP) is the single most important free SEO asset you have. Go to business.google.com, claim your listing, and fill in every field: business name, category, address, phone, website, hours, description, and photos. Add at least 10 photos including your team, storefront, and work examples. An incomplete profile ranks poorly — a fully filled profile can put you in the Map Pack for local searches.

Add Your City/Region to Title Tags on Every Page
Google uses your page title (the text in the browser tab) as one of its strongest ranking signals. If your title says "Web Design Services" but you want to rank in Fairhope, AL, you're invisible to local searches. Change it to "Web Design Services | Fairhope, AL | DBell Creations." Do this for every service page on your site. Keep titles under 60 characters.
03
Medium 2–4 hrs
Create a Dedicated Page for Each Service You Offer
If you offer 5 services and they're all listed on one "Services" page, Google can't rank you for each service individually. Create a separate page for each: /plumbing-repair, /water-heater-installation, /drain-cleaning, etc. Each page should have 300+ words, a unique title tag with your city, an H1 heading, and a clear call-to-action. This is one of the most effective local SEO moves you can make.

Get 10 New Google Reviews This Month
Reviews are a direct ranking signal for local SEO and a conversion signal for every visitor who finds you. Ask every happy customer right after the job is done — in person is best. Say: "Would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? It really helps us out." Then text them your GBP review link. Aim for 10 new reviews in 30 days, then build a system so you're getting them consistently. Never offer incentives — Google may remove incentivized reviews.

Medium 1–2 hrs
Fix Missing or Duplicate Title Tags & Meta Descriptions
Use a free tool like Screaming Frog SEO Spider (free up to 500 URLs) or Google Search Console → Coverage → look for "Duplicate, without user-selected canonical" errors. Every page needs a unique title (under 60 characters) and unique meta description (under 160 characters). Pages sharing the same title confuse Google and split your ranking power. Fix duplicates and make sure no page has a missing title.
06
Medium 2–3 hrs
Compress Images & Add Alt Text to Every Image
Large uncompressed images slow down your site — and Google uses page speed as a ranking factor. Run every image through Squoosh.app (free, browser-based) or convert to WebP format. Aim for images under 150KB. Then add descriptive alt text to every image: instead of alt="image1.jpg", use alt="plumber fixing kitchen sink in Fairhope AL". Alt text helps Google understand your images and helps visually impaired users.

Easy 1 hr
Add Your City & Region to H1 Headings on Service Pages
Your H1 heading (the main headline on each page) should include your primary keyword and location. Instead of "Professional Plumbing Services", use "Professional Plumbing Services in Fairhope & Baldwin County, AL". Every service page should have exactly one H1 that includes your service + location. This is one of the strongest on-page SEO signals and takes about 5 minutes per page to update.

Set Up Google Search Console & Submit Your Sitemap
Google Search Console (free at search.google.com/search-console) lets you see which keywords bring traffic, find crawl errors, and tell Google about new pages. Set it up, verify your site, then go to Sitemaps and submit your sitemap URL (usually yoursite.com/sitemap.xml). This tells Google to crawl your site faster when you make updates. Also check the Coverage report for any pages Google can't access.

Add LocalBusiness Schema Markup to Your Homepage
Schema markup is code you add to your site that helps Google understand your business — name, address, phone, hours, and type of business. Use DBell's free Schema Generator tool to create the code in 2 minutes, then paste it into the <head> of your homepage. This powers Google's Knowledge Panel and helps with local search. It won't immediately boost rankings but it helps Google trust your business info and can unlock rich results in search.

Get Listed on 5 Local Directories (Citations)
Local citations — mentions of your business name, address, and phone (NAP) on other websites — are a ranking signal for local search. Start with these 5 free ones: Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Facebook Business, and BBB.org. Make sure your NAP is exactly the same on every directory as it is on your website. Even small differences (St. vs Street, Suite vs Ste.) can confuse Google and dilute your local authority.
